10000 hits

Filed under: Other, Sega Saturn — zhooibaal @ 23:34000000

Today this blog has passed the magical number of 10000 hits since it was started on Januari 25th this year.

Now it isn’t all that impressive for a site to reach 10000 hits in nearly 9 months, but from the 1 or 2 hits I got every day back then I now get about 40 to 50 hits every day, which isn’t all that bad for a blog that isn’t actually updated on a daily basis. If I would enter a story, like, every day I’m sure I would get more hits than I do now, but what do I blog about if I don’t have anything to blog about? Now there’s a good question… I’m not someone who’s just going to rant about nothing just for the sake of it… I will only rant with a reason about something that I think is interesting and not just about any junk I find on the web or in a store or wherever.

Anyway, now I’m allready at it, I found this awsome little gadget over in a webshop in Germany… It’s actually an awfully expensive webshop, but that to the side, these things aren’t very easy to find, so I’m willing to pay a little extra EURO for that.
And what is this all about then eh? Eh? EEEEEH!?

Well, about this:

Even though the shipping costs are relatively high and I don’t want to recommend this webshop to anyone because it’s really expensive when it comes to classic gaming stuff I won’t actually place a link here and I won’t file this under Bargain Hunting (hehe). All I need to do now is transfer the money and I’ll receive it shortly I hope… If I’m not being screwed over badly, but I’ll wait a little with doing that, just to prevent what I just wrote and if anyone can point me to a place where I can get one of these for a price below €21,95 with some extra shipping costs I would gladly hear it and I’ll ofcourse give you credit for it on this very blog.

Today’s new additions

Filed under: Bargain hunting, Games, Movies, Retro, Sega Saturn — zhooibaal @ 22:30000000

Allright, I ordered a 2 Saturn games and a DVD movie from gamesgarage a little while ago and today they finally arrived:

DVD movie:

Bug! is a cute little platform game where you play a bug called Bug. I find the approach of this game rather unique. It is basicly a sidescrolling platform game with a pseudo 3D look, but you have the ability to move in 6 directions:

  1. left
  2. rigth
  3. forward
  4. backward
  5. up
  6. down

What I mean by this is that you can move left and right like in a traditional sidescroller, but it also has paths that are connected at a 90 degree angle to the left-right path allowing you to move in 4 different directions on the ground. Added to that there are also paths that stand straight op from the main path allowing you to walk up and down on a 90 degree angle. Especially the vertical walking looks really funny.
The game’s style may look pretty childish, but it is a really fun game to play and a nice diversion from the traditional sidescrolling platformer.

Battle Arena Toshinden Remix

Battle Arena Toshinden Remix (BATR) is a tradional 3D 360 degree fighting game. According to critics it might not be as good as Virtua Fighter but I tend to disagree to a certain degree.
In my honest opinion BATR has better playability than Virtua Fighter, especially for a beginner to the genre. The easy setting is really easy and is very well suitable for those who aren’t any good at fighting games like myself and it is also very good to get to know the controls and learning how to attack and defend. With Virtua Fighter, even on the easy setting, I couldn’t get past the second fight without getting my ass kicked, so I think BATR is quite a bit better for me.
The graphics of this game are comparable to Virtua Fighter with one exception, the character models are textured and the character models of Virtua Fighter are flat shaded. I believe there is also a version for the Saturn of Virtua Fighter with textured character models, my friend Daniel told me that and ofcourse there is Virtua Fighter 2 which also has textured character models and, as far as I can tell from the screenshots, it does look a bit better than BATR.
Anyway, I find BATR to be a very fun fighting game and especially in single player mode, more fun than Virtua Fighter. I haven’t played either in 2 player mode yet, so I’ll have yet to see which one is more fun in 2 player mode.

Lemony Snicket’s: a Series of Unfortunate Events

It’s just a shame that I’ve never stumbled upon the special edition of this movie, but finally I have it on DVD anyway. This movie is in one word: brilliant. You may disagree with me, but I can watch this movie over and over again without getting bored of it. I used to have it on a burned DVD, so a fake one and I’ve been looking for a proper one for quite some time and now I got it at a bargain price, beit the standard edition without the fancy box displayed at IMDB.
This film is all about 3 kids who lose their parents in a terrible accident: their house burned down. To make things worse, they are being placed under guardianship of their beloved uncle Count Olaf. They soon discover that this Count Olaf isn’t the kind of person you want to be with so eventually they are removed from the house of Count Olaf and placed under guardianship of the next previously unknown strange family member. During all this moving from guardian to guardian a lot of, let’s say, unfortunate events occur and some details are revealed even before the chapter has properly begun, but that only adds to funfactor of this movie, believe me, it’s true.
If you haven’t seen this movie, go rent it or something, you’ll love it, now my search continues for the next DVD: Tim Buton’s Corpse Bride and the special, extended edition of Sin City… MUST… HAVE!

That’s it for now, here are just a few pictures of the new aquisitions:

As you might notice, the title on the cover of this movie is Dutch, however, the movie itself is in English. I would actually feel pretty fucked if it would have been only in Dutch, but it’s English and French. I would still had preffered Dutch over French though…

Bargain-bin-hunt, result: 2 “new” Saturn games

Filed under: Bargain hunting, Games, Retro, Sega Saturn — zhooibaal @ 17:18000000

Today I went to Replay Videogames once again and once again I started searching the bargain bin over there for interesting stuff. Today I found the following:

Virtua Fighter

WWF WrestleMania

Both games are in perfect working state and above all, I like them both. Maybe the graphics of either aren’t really impressive, they do look reasonably good. With Virtua Fighter you might want to keep in mind that it was actually the first game which had poligonal 3D models for human characters. WWF WrestleMania on the other hand simply has sprites which are more functional than good looking. Both are ports from earlier arcade versions, thus explaining why the WWF game is quite a lot faster on the gameplay than later games on N64 and even after that and still coming out on PS2 and XBox. Both the N64 and PS2/XBox versions have better graphics though (yow, Captain Obvious strikes again).

Christmas NiGHTS into Dreams + Daytona USA (Saturn)

Filed under: Bargain hunting, Games, Retro, Sega Saturn — zhooibaal @ 20:05000000

After waiting for over a week, they were finally delivered at my home. I’ve had barely any time to play them yet, but I did do a testrun on both of them.

Christmas NiGHTS into Dreams

Daytona USA

Christmas NiGHTS into Dreams

Christmas NiGHTS into Dreams is a special edition demo version of NiGHTS into Dreams created by Sonic Team. It’s a platform like game in which you can play either as Elliot Edwards or as Claris Sinclair, but the main character of the game is neither one or the other, the main character is called NiGHTS who was a first class Maren together with Reala who were both created by Wizeman, the evildoer of this game.
When NiGHTS realizes how evil his master is he gets locked up in an Ideya Palace. He managed to find a way to escape with the help of a human dreamer. These dreamers are Elliot and Claris.
The gameplay consists of a mix between platform jump ‘n run and some kind of flying and dancing around the air. The “normal” platform style will be as you are playing with either Elliot or Claris, depending on who you choose before the game starts and the flying around style will be when you are playing with NiGHTS. First you play one of the kids and on certain points you can change to NiGHTS. To finish a level you have to fly through a certain number of rings. On the way you can collect all kinds of bonusses and perform dancing moves while in the air for extra bonusses. A special controller is available for this game, but unfortunatly I don’t have it (yet).

Daytona USA

The box of this game claims it to be a pixel-perfect conversion of the popular arcade racing game Daytona USA. Well, I can tell you one thing, it isn’t. The arcade machine’s hardware is far superior to the hardware of the Saturn, so even if they wanted to get close to make it as good as the original, they would certainly need a stronger machine than the Saturn.
But this doesn’t mean it’s a bad game, on the contrary, I think this is a very fun racing game albeit that it has only 3 tracks and very few cars to choose from. It doesn’t look too good, but still way better than other racing games like Hi-Octane. I did notice, however, that the screenshots on the back of the box are from the arcade version. This doesn’t really matter too much though considering the size of the shots, Doom has shots from the PC version on the back of the box.
In the bottom line, Daytona USA is what you would expect from it, a racing game that has nice speed readouts on the speed-o-meter and plays very smooth, this being for as far as I have played it yet. The only real drawback I noticed is the absense of any multiplayer modes, nothing beats a 2 player splitscreen race with a friend.

Saturn controllers

Filed under: Bargain hunting, Retro, Sega Saturn — zhooibaal @ 20:06000000

One of my Saturn controllers was busted, the “B” was hanging and because the case is unrepairably damaged, there’s nothing I can do about it. So I decided to venture into the World Wide Web to find a replacement.
Not long after that I found someone who was selling 2 controllers:

  1. Saturn Super Pad 8
  2. Saturn Hyper Controller

I decided to grab both and I received them today.

Super Pad 8
Super Pad 8
Hyper Controller
Hyper Controller

The Super Pad 8 works perfectly, but the Hyper Controller’s start button didn’t work at first so I opened the little bastard up and concluded that the contact was faulty because of dirt, I cleaned it and voila, it works.
Now I have 3 controllers for my Saturn so that means that I have 1 in reserve. That never hurts.
